Ms and Memory Loss

,

Because complicated sclerosis causes bodily change and damage to both the spinal cord and the brain there is no doubt that there is a link in the middle of the loss of memory and Ms. Studies show that almost 40% to 50% of all people with complicated sclerosis suffer some form of memory loss.  The estimate of memory loss and the effects it has on the sick person are just as dissimilar as any of the other symptoms are.

The most coarse problems related with Ms and memory loss are being unable to remember to do things like keep appointments and the inability to remember up-to-date events in the patient's life. Long term memory seems for the most part to be unaffected much as in an Alzheimer patient. While many patients can finally piece together adequate facts to faultless the memory it can be very frustrating for them.

Studies show us that the memory can be split into two functional groups, procedural memory and semantic memory.  The procedural memory is that area that retains the knowledge of how to achieve a determined task. For instance once you learn how to drive, you never forget even though you may get a slight rusty if you do not drive for a long time. There seems to be slight occasion of losing this type of memory and Ms has no result on it.

However with semantic memory and Ms there is plenty of data to retain the fact that the two are right on interrelated. Semantic memory is the part of the brain that remembers things like appointments or where you put your keys last night. It is the area that stores up-to-date events and your internal dictionary. While most people affected by this type of memory loss may not be able to tell you what they had for supper last night, they can recap in information what happened many years ago.

Because of the random way that memory loss can occur it can be very frustrating for the someone dealing with it. Many patients may feel like they are losing their minds and become severely depressed.  Memory loss such as this requires the sick person to make some changes to their lives to adapt to these memory gaps, in some cases making lists will help, for others the memory loss be become so critical that it may influence their potential to work a job.
